Updating an old cabinet

I got this old ugly cabinet for free. I saw some potential in it so I got busy. First, Peyton helped me take off all the hardware. Then, I sanded it down with a rotary sander.  Next, I painted it. I tried a rolling it on and brushing it on. I don’t remember which I preferred. Sorry! Surprisingly, the finish looked the same. You couldn’t tell where I brushed vs. rolled. Scott spray painted the hinges silver for me. I bought the glass handles at Home Depot. I LOVE how it turned out! I had it in my scrapbook room at first but now it’s in my bedroom. It’s a versatile piece.

Scrapbook Canvas Art

My bedroom has vaulted ceilings and I felt like I needed something big over the bed to fill up the space. It was going to be pricy to buy something large enough for that space. I decided I would make some "art" instead of buying something. When I was at Big Lots I saw some 12x12 blank canvases. They were $5.00 a piece. I immediately thought that scrapbook paper would fit perfectly on it. I purchased the nine canvases and mod podge. I already had plenty of scrapbook paper at home to dig threw so I didn’t have to buy any of that. This was a pretty simple project. Here are the steps I used to create this scrapbook canvas art:

1.  Brush Mod Podge on the canvas

2. Spray some water on the scrapbook paper to make it more pliable

3. Put the paper on the canvas

4. Let it dry

5. Brush Mod Podge over the scrapbook paper (I let it dry then did a second coat)

**The paper did wrinkle when it got wet but then flattened out once it dried.

My first 2x4 letter blocks

2x4 letter blocks are quite the rage right now. I think they are so cute so I decided to give it a try. These are the first letter blocks I made.

My DH cut and sanding the 2x4 pieces of wood for me. What a sweetie! The first thing I did was paint them matte black. While the paint was drying I started cutting my scrapbook paper down to size. I tried several different methods. I tried tearing the paper. I used a ruler to keep the line straight. I like the frayed edge it created but I couldn’t get consistent straight lines. My plan B was just to cut it with a paper trimmer. Then, I used the corner rounder and black chalking ink on the edges of the paper. I was pleased with how they turned out. I used my cricut to cut out the letters. I used the Plantin Schoolbook cartridge. I ran my letters through the xyron and them but them on the pieces of paper.  And of course, I used Mod Podge to adhere the paper to the wood and as the protective coat over the whole thing.

Messy Scrapbook Room

 I thought that I would share pictures of my lovely craft room! I'm so thankful that I am able to have a craft room. The one problem with my craft room is that it ends up being the drop zone and I tend to not put projects away. My craft room is used for more than just crafts. I use it for paying bills, working on school projects and storing things that I don't know where else to put. I think it's time to clean it up so I can actually use it! Most people probably wouldn't want to post pictures like this but it's my reality sometimes. My hope is that this makes you not feel so bad about your craft room occasionally getting disorganized. :-)

 

Birthday Banner

Here is the Toy Story Themed Birthday banner I made. I downloaded digital content from two sites to make this banner. One was by Melly Scraps & the kit was called Space Cowboy. The other digital content was from Creative Memories. I hole punched each piece of paper on the top left and right and then ran twine threw it.  Then I added coordinating ribbon between each piece of paper. I didn't get a real good picture of it but you can see half of it in this one. I am still learning about how to work blogger and am having a bit of an issue inserting the banner as a jpeg or pdf so that you can download it and print it. This is the best I could do after hours of working on this. If anyone has tips on how to insert documents a better way, please let me know!
